SUMMARY:Virtual Book Club Discussion: Kim Liao's "Where Every Ghost Has a Name"
DESCRIPTION:Taipei Times | An American granddaughter’s quest to unravel her family’s murky history has resulted in an outstanding biography of Thomas Liao and the fight for Taiwanese independence \n  \nSaturday\, February 15\, 2025 – 10AM – 11:30AM | Webex \n“Where Every Ghost Has a Name” Intergenerational Book Club Discussion (English) \nJoin the Taiwanese American Federation of Northern California for an intergenerational virtual book club discussion on Kim Liao’s memoir\, “Where Every Ghost Has a Name: A Memoir of Taiwanese Independence.” The discussion will be primarily in English (Taiwanese or Mandarin comments welcome) and moderated by Leona Chen. Registration required for link to participate. \n10:00AM – Opening remarks & introduction \n10:05 – 11:00AM – Guided discussion \n11:00 – 11:30AM  – Open discussion/reflection \nWebex Link: https://tafnc.webex.com/tafnc/j.php?MTID=me53461d53930b8d37bef9c8cfe36a4b2 \nBook Club Discussion Questions –  \n\nBefore reading this book\, how would you describe the major aspirations of the Taiwanese independence movement? How does reading this book impact that answer\, if at all?\nWhat was your impression of Thomas Liao 廖文毅 prior to reading the book (if you had one)? How does Kim’s memoir complicate\, challenge\, or change that?\nSeveral prominent figures of the Taiwanese independence movement are mentioned in the book. Who do you recognize? What surprised you about how they are characterized? What questions would you ask them today\, if you could? \nThe memoir reveals the profound sacrifices each member of the Liao family made\, willingly and not. What choices or circumstances resonated with you? Why?\nWhich character did you find most intriguing? Why?\nHow would you describe the central tension of this book? Did it feel resolved by the end?\nFor Kim\, the seminal text that drew her to this era of Taiwanese political history was Formosa Betrayed. What was yours? How did it make you feel? What do you remember about that reading experience?\nHow does this memoir contribute to or expand Taiwanese American literature? What is the significance of discussing and reading this with a multigenerational Taiwanese American community?\n\nWriting/Reflection Prompts –  \n\nWho is a person in your life (family\, friend\, community member) you would like to learn more about? What stories have you heard about them? Write 5 questions you would ask them today\, if you could.\nIf you could learn more about a historical event from the perspective of someone in your life who lived through it\, who/what would it be? Why?\nMuch of this book grapples with the difficulty of writing about real people in a public way; some of the characters mentioned were reluctant to be written about; others are no longer here to give their explicit consent. If someone close to you were to write about you\, how would you feel? What would you want to know? What would you be proud to share? What would you be uncomfortable sharing?\n\n

A key figure in Taiwan’s dangwai movement\, Yao was imprisoned for editing the pro-democracy journal Taiwan Political Review and later became Chair of the Democratic Progressive Party. His most recent book\, A Century of Taiwan’s Democratic Movement\, is a powerful first-person account that interweaves historical documentation with lived experience—charting Taiwan’s struggle for self-determination from Japanese colonial rule to the present day. SUMMARY:[3/14] 北加州灣區電影放映: 「大濛」| Bay Area Screening: "A Foggy Tale"
DESCRIPTION:️ 北加州灣區電影特別放映: 《大濛 A Foggy Tale》 \n導演｜陳玉勳年份｜2025產地｜台灣類型｜時代劇情片片長｜約 135 分鐘字幕｜英文，中文字幕 \nBay Area Screening: A Foggy Tale (with English subtitles) \nJoin us in the Bay Area for a special screening of 《大濛 A Foggy Tale》\, a powerful Taiwanese period drama set during the White Terror era. Spanning the 1950s (1951–1960)\, the film portrays the everyday lives\, moral tensions\, and social atmosphere experienced by ordinary people under authoritarian rule. \nThe title 《大濛》 echoes the Taiwanese phrase 「罩雺（Tà-bông）」\, meaning fog—a recurring visual and metaphorical motif throughout the film. Clouds\, mist\, and partial visibility become ways of sensing fear\, ambiguity\, and endurance under political repression. \n️ Tickets must be purchased in advance.\n Cinemark Century at Union City \n Saturday\, March 14\, 2026 \n 1:00–3:15 PM (Doors open at 12:30 PM for seating) \n✅ Admission guaranteed with ticket; seating is first-come\, first-served \n誠摯邀請您參加北加州灣區特別放映——《大濛》。
